Project 1.

You work for a small I.T. company, and the owner has recently returned from a seminar on building a better business - working smarter not harder.  As part of this seminar, he attended a seminar on managing the Human Resources within the company.  So, he bought the books, and has now returned to the office, with a new passion for setting up a H.R. department.  You have been working for the organisation as the office manager for over 12 months.  You have now been promoted to set up the H.R. department.

The staff currently consist of:

Tom Jones            Owner and Managing Director of the company "Whiz Bang Web Design"

John O'Rourke     Senior Web Designer

Sue Meredith        Web Designer

Jenni Frost            School Based Trainee - Completing Cert III in Information Technology

Janice Jones         Office Admin

Nancy Alley         Sales and Marketing.

Tom has shared his vision of the company growth with you, and you now know that the staff will at least double by the end of the year.

Tom has asked you to set up a H.R. manual, and a system that can be used to do the following:

        *    Recruit new team members;

        *    Appraise performance of staff;

        *    Monitor skills and training;

        *    Reward excellence in the workplace

The books Tom bought are "Writing a Human Resources Manual" and "Human Relations in Small Business"

Tom is going overseas on a ski-ing holiday for the next 4 weeks, but he will be available for questions via email - so send your questions to your trainer - put in the subject "Question for TOM" and your trainer will be able to reply on behalf of TOM.

New Messages from Tom.

The snow is not very good at the moment, so I've been talking to a few other business owners who are here, and collecting more ideas that I'd like you to also think about in our H.R. system.

Can you check out the Department of Industrial Relations in QLD - the web site is http://www.deir.qld.gov.au/industrial/index.htm

Also, have you thought about how we are going to prove that our staff have been inducted into the company and that all the rules and regulations and conditions have been explained to them.  I'm hearing a few horror stories at the moment.

I'd like you to also look at another good example of H.R. system and induction processes  at http://www.hru.uts.edu.au/recruitment/overview/index.html

I've found a pretty simple checklist for inductions as well - http://www.workcover.vic.gov.au/wps/wcm/resources/file/ebd5b7463243cce/induction_checklist.doc

Yes, I take you point about the books being written for the American Market, however, it's a good place to start, and hoping that you will be able to develop a system that works well for us.

Keep up the good work - Talk again soon.
